前段時間,一位美國有爭議的作者Ann Coulter來伯克萊(Berkeley)演講,遭到校方拒絕,並提出了一些條件。Ann 在接受Fox電視臺訪問時說:
Coulter said she “called their bluff” by agreeing to rules set by the university seeking to prevent violence. 她挑戰大學,答應他們的條件,看他們怎麽辦。
call someone’s bluff (to expose a person’s deception; challenge someone to carry out a threat) 揭穿對方,挑戰對方。等於我們常說的“你少來,有本事做給我們看。”
以前是打牌用語,後來進入到日常口語,成爲非常有用的俚語。

- He always said he would quit, so we finally called his bluff. 他動不動就說要辭職,後來我們就順水推舟同意了。(其實他並不是真的想走,只是想提條件)
- All right, I’ll call your Bluff. Go ahead, do it! 好吧,別光說,有本事來啊!
- He always bragged about his wealth, so we called his bluff and asked him to pay for the meal. 他總是炫耀自己的財富,我們忍無可忍,對他說,你那麽有錢,請把晚餐費用付了。
